About the maker:
The "MH & Co" company commenced in Sheffield UK in 1820 with a partnership between Henry Wilkinson and John Roberts, trading as Wilkinson & Roberts. The partnership dissolved in 1836 and the company continued as John Roberts. In 1846, apprentice Ebenezer Hall was made partner and the company traded under the name Roberts & Hall.
One of the best-known British manufacturers, the company participated in many international exhibitions, including the Crystal Palace Great Exhibition in 1851, the first of a series of World Fair exhibitions. In 1854, Roberts & Hall joined forces with Martin & Naylor to form Martin, Hall & Co. In 1866, Martin Hall & Co was incorporated and became Martin Hall & Co Ltd with Bernard Wake as chairman, and Richard Martin and Ebenezer Hall as joint managing directors. The company prospered, producing good quality silver and silver-plate, and sent their wares for hallmarking in London, Chester, Sheffield and Birmingham. By 1914 the company was employing approximately 750 people. After World War I business declined and the company fell into bankruptcy in 1936.
